Thirty welcome benches have been installed throughout Stellenbosch University’s campus. These benches have greetings inscribed on them in all 11 official languages of South Africa plus some unofficial languages and dialects (Braille, Sign Language, San, Xhosa, Zulu, Xitsonga, Tshivenda, SiSwati, Sesotho, Setswana, Ndebele, Sepedi, Kaaps, Muslim Kaaps, English, Afrikaans). The aim of the benches is to promote inclusivity and diversity as advocated by the Visual Redress Policy. This includes: “Forms of art, symbols, architecture and other expressions that deliberately share something of the rich historic and cultural heritage of Stellenbosch, the Western Cape, South Africa and Africa” (SU, 2021:7).
